Common Reasons for Foam Bit Vibration

Common Reasons for Foam Bit Vibration

When using CNC foam mill cutters, you may find some are unusable. The bits become unbalanced, causing significant oscillations and vibrations. They start to vibrate and shake even at lower speeds. Do you know what causes foam bit vibration?

Foam bit vibration can be caused by a variety of factors, often related to the router machine, the operation technique, etc. Here are some common reasons we conclude based on our rich experience:

1.Incorrect Speed Settings: Operating the router at an incorrect speed for the foam bit or material can cause vibration. Normally, foam bits can reach 3000 RPM; even smaller diameter foam bits (like D20 foam bits) can achieve higher speeds. When using larger diameter foam bits, like D40 foam bits, you should increase the RPM gradually from a lower setting.

2.Inappropriate Foam Bit Selection: Using a bit that's not suited for the specific material or type of cut can lead to excessive vibration.

3.Contact Your Manufacturer: Contact the manufacturer who supplies your foam bits. Describe all problems you have encountered in detail. It is better to send more information about your machine and spindle motor, along with videos showing your machine and the milling cutter vibration during operation.

4.Check Your Collect: If the collet is clogged with dust or tiny substances, it will obviously influence vibration.

5.Replace the Collect (Most Important): We suggest changing to a new high-precision collect—8μm (microns) precision is fine, ideally within 8μm. A worn collet can fail to hold the bit securely, causing vibration.

6.Imbalanced Foam Bits: If a foam bit is not perfectly balanced, it can cause the router to vibrate. This defect belongs to the bit's wear and tear. Check the milling cutters for irregularities on their bottom surface, as these also induce vibration.

7.The foam bit is not straight. When your machine starts to spin with this bit, it creates a lot of noise and vibration.

Anyway, we sincerely hope every client can use their foam bits successfully. But if you encounter problems, we hope your supplier will be responsible for resolving them.
