CNC machine tools have been widely used in factories to meet the demand for machining accuracy. In CNC industry, CNC tool holders (also called toolholders, collet chucks, tool holder cones, and collet milling chucks) becomes the bridge between the cutting tools and the spindle. It can place the router bits into the spindle, which has a big significance in maintaining tool stability, accuracy, and performance. Here are some common types of CNC tool holders:

CNC toolholder is made of 3 parts: the collet pocket, the flange, and the taper. The clamping method has two methods: direct clamping and collet clamping, today we talked about the collet clamping.

Tool holders (toolholders) connect the machine tool to the CNC milling bits. They are different according to their interface. They are HSK Tool Holders, CAT Tool Holders, BT tool holder, BBT toolholder, ISO tool holder, etc.

HSK Tool Holders:

HSK stands for "hollow taper shank," there is no pull stud here. An HSK tool holder's clamping mechanism is actuated from the inside, with segmented collets that expand in a radial manner under pressure.

HSK tool holder generates twice as much clamping force on the flange as a CAT tool tool holder. HSK shank styles range from A to F with different sizes of the taper.

HSK 63 tool holder(HSK63F-ER32-70L) is the most popular for woodworking ATC CNC machines, its tool forks, named “ HSK 63F tool forks”

CAT Tool Holders:

CAT tool holders, also known as V-Flange Tooling/ V-Flange Tools, are used for various applications ranging from heavy-duty roughing to precision machining.

Normally we have these CAT tooling: CAT 30, CAT 40, CAT 50, etc. 

CAT is the American standard, so CAT series toolholder and CAT series tool forks are more popular in America. 

BT tool holder

Both CAT tapered tool holders and BT tapered tool holders are similar.

So you need to recognize the flange style and flange thickness, and the thread for the pull stud is a different size. CAT Tooling uses Imperial (English) thread pull studs (retention knobs).

BT is the later technology of Japanese standard. So BT40 tool holders BT40 tool forks are more popular in Asia. 

For example, BT 40 tool holders, and BT30 tool holders are normal BT tool holders in the woodworking industry.

It is easy to find that both the flange size of BT40 tool holder and flange size HSK63 tool are the same, so they use the same locking device---HSK63/BT40 Tool Holder Locking;

the flange size of the ISO30 tool holder and the flange size HSK50 tool holder are the same, so they use the same locking device---ISO30/HSK50 Tool Holder Tightening

BBT tool holder:

BBT Tool Holder Provides More Rigid Clamping than the Standard BT Tool Holders. it has higher radial rigidity.

ISO Tool Holders:

It is the American standard, It has good performance in the hardened, precision ground and fine balance. They ensure you can achieve the best results from your machine.

After knowing their CNC woodworking tool holder features, you need to know how to choose a suitable tool holder for your system

1. Clear the specifications of the toolholders, like ISO30, HSK63F, NBT30, BT30 

2. Clear the system of the clamping end, like collects ER40 collects, ER16 Collects, ER20 collects, and OZ collects (EOC, RDO, SYOZ collet). 

3. The consideration of machining accuracy and function.
