These are pull studs, also called retaining studs or retention knobs. They are screwed into the arbor on a CNC milling or drilling machine and used to connect the tool spindle and tool holder.

The pull stud bolt is the only part connecting the machining center and the tooling, preventing the arbor from coming out unless released intentionally. So it is a very important component and should be inspected regularly. Remember to fully tighten the retention knob. Failure to do so may result in the tool holder coming loose during operation.

CNC pull studs should be replaced once they show wear marks. We suggest replacing the CNC tool holder pull stud every 6/8 months. A worn knob is extremely detrimental to the TIR of a tool holder and replacing your retention knob is an easy and inexpensive way to improve the accuracy of the toolholder by up to 10X! and damaged pull studs will result in incorrect clamping of the tool holder in the spindle and can lead to serious damage to CNC machine spindle and workpiece and even injuries on persons.

There are several various styles and sizes of CNC retention knobs available to suit varieties of CNC machines. Most pull stud bolts are made to suit specific CNC machine brands. They often look similar and appear to be interchangeable, but in reality, they are not.
Please make sure that the Retention Knob you order is the correct one for your machine. Using the wrong pull stud can cause damage to your machine spindle, the tool holder, and may cause a safety hazard.
