How to Wire Rotary Encoder for the MPG Handwheel Controller
CNC machining is common in manufacturing nowadays. It completes the high-accuracy result with multiple processes in a short time by the computer. Besides, automation technology and minimal human input have been the trends for a long time. In this era, we have various methods to complete one manufacturing procedure. So, how do we position the CNC machine and its axes to the zero point? There are four ways to complete this task: Using CNC control panel keys, control panel touch screen, computer software program setting, or manual pulse generator (MPG).
In some situations, we decide to use an encoder device called a manual pulse generator to operate it rather than using the machine panel or PC. Why? The manual pulse generator allows the operator to control the machine tools while walking around nearby. It is essential to learn about it when learning CNC machine functions. We will introduce this critical device in automation technology today.
What is a rotary encoder?
Rotary encoders are used to control the speed of the conveyor belt as well as the direction of the movement. They are required in warehouse distribution, baggage handling, and case-packing systems. It is a important part for a MPG hand wheel.
The primary wiring connections for a handwheel encoder typically include a power supply, signal outputs and additional connections.
Encoder Terminals:
Vcc ----- +5V Power Supply
GND ----- Ground
A ----- CNC Controller Input A
B ----- CNC Controller Input B
Z ----- CNC Controller Input Z (if used)
SHLD ----- Ground (for shielding, if present)
Ensure to consult the specific hand wheel encoder's datasheet or manual for precise wiring details and to verify the voltage and signal requirements.
How to connect the encoder to the handwheel?
To wire a handwheel rotary encoder to a handwheel, you will need to follow these general steps. The exact steps may vary depending on the model of the encoder and handwheel, so always refer to the manufacturer's instructions.
Required materials
1. Handwheel
2. Encoder
3. Connection cable (usually included with the encoder)
4. Screwdriver
5. Soldering iron (if soldering is required)
6. Heat shrink tubing or electrical tape (for insulation)
MPG Handwheel encoder wiring procedure
1. Identify the Encoder Terminals of the encoder.
Power (Vcc), Ground (GND), Signal A (or Channel A), Signal B (or Channel B), and sometimes Signal Z (Index).
2. Mount the encoder:
Secure the encoder to the handwheel and make sure the encoder is securely mounted and properly aligned.
3. Connecting power and ground:
Connect the encoder's power cable (usually red) to the power supply. This is usually the same power source used for the handwheel.
Connect the encoder's ground wire (usually black) to the earth.
4. Connect the signal wires:
Connect encoder signal A (usually green or yellow) to the corresponding input on the handwheel controller.
Connect signal B (usually white or blue) to the corresponding input.
If signal Z is available, connect it (usually for precise position indexing).
5. Insulate and secure connections:
Insulate any exposed wire connections using heat shrink tubing or electrical tape.
Ensure that all connections are secure and protected from environmental factors to prevent short circuits or disconnections.
6. test connections:
Apply power to the system and check that the encoder is working properly.
Rotate the handwheel to verify that the encoder is sending the correct signal to the handwheel controller.
7. Calibrate:
Some systems may require calibration after connecting the encoder. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for any calibration steps.
